Nordic Walking is classified as a green exercise. There is no maintenance to courts, you do not have to worry about leaving a carbon footprint while exercising. You don't really need anybody to do it with (although that is social!), or need a special venue as you can literally do it anywhere (outdoor or indoor). The fact that our lifestyles had become greener and more environmentally friendly puts Nordic Walking at the top of the list of sports that are GREEN with leaving a little carbon footprint (manufacturing of poles).
One should not confuse Nordic Walking with activities such as trekking, hill walking, hiking, etc. Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking. And that is something we ALL can do, but Nordic Walking is twice as effective! How? By using a specific fitness walking technique and using specially designed poles (sticks if you like).
Nordic Walking combines the simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning, which is in a way similar to Nordic skiing. The result is a full-body workout that can burn a significant amount of calories without a change in perceived exertion or having to walk faster. The special resistance walking technique applied to each stride utilises several large core and other upper-body muscles (up to 90% of the body's total muscle mass). Research has shown that Nordic walkers use more of their entire body, with greater intensity, than normal walkers. Nordic Walking targets muscles such as the chest, lats, triceps, biceps, shoulders, abdominals, spinal and other core muscles. So in order to get the most benefit from Nordic Walking you need to learn the proper and correct technique.
Right, we have come to a conclusion: Nordic Walking is an easy-going (soft on the joints) activity for ALL people, it is even environmentally friendly. BUT it needs to be done right to reap total benefits, and those are benefits you will be able to notice after a few sessions. The greater and total BENEFITS of Nordic Walking:
